How-to by Kazu

Here is a cool step-by-step of the process Kazu Kibuishi uses on his "Copper" strip. I especially like that he uses a "cheap flat-bed scanner" because, so do I.

Process page 14 - rendering

Here is the second pass of pencils. I changed the gun a little in panel 5 because it looked too small in the original layout. And that's right...those are speed lines baby!

11 pages and counting

page-1, originally uploaded by MDTSHORT.

Photo set of the first 11 inked pages put up on flickr for sharing etc. I have pencils scanned for p12 (but not for 13) and am working on p 14 now. Moving right along. Anyway I was playing with various venues for posting/viewing this stuff and flickr seems pretty good. Tell me what you think - either here or there.

Process page 14 - sketch

Here is the first pass at page 14. sketch the whole thing with light pencil (2h or 4h). Making sure everything is ok before adding any lines or tone. (The big ugly gray streak in the middle is due to my small scanner.)

pages from Hank's war

Last night I scanned in the old pencils and parital inks of the comic we did with April back in early 1997. We are close to the 10 year anniversary of this work. Also these are the first comic pages I ever did. The cover is an add-on I did a couple months ago after a cover from the Losers.

Process...

the pic below was an attempt to draw a nice background and then more cartoony characters. I think it came out pretty good. Here I have put the original photo background next to the drawing I did of it and added a photoshop combo of the two pieces...

psion sketch

Reading the "Buy my Books" column on CBR...Kirkman was hyping up his collaborator Cory Walker. Walker has an easy cartoony style which inspired me to draw.

Alexander...closer to great

Finally got to work a little more on this and then my computer died. I had to rescan and recolor the entire thing. Tell me what you think?

Alexander the Great

Here is the first draft of the Alexander drawing I am doing for Koli. Still haven't finished rendering with color and need to add the title. Comments welcome.

interesting article on work for hire rights

Started doing a little research on the whole ownership of creative property . The Star Wars dude asked if I'd do some concept art for a movie he is pitching to some "Hollywood Execs." Riiiight. Anyway, I humored him and said I was interested just to make sure I'd get the stupid stormtrooper helmet. It sounds like anything I'd create for this guy would become his property but I could retain rights to any original art. I THINK that means that if that guy wanted to take that Star Wars drawing I did, mass produce it, and sell it, he could do it without me seeing a single penny. I could only take the original drawing and sell that if I wanted. It's a shitty deal for an artist, particularly if you design something like the Terminator endoskeleton for a movie studio, the movie goes on to spawn sequels, merchandise, comic series and you never see another cent more than your original fee.

In this case, the guy hasn't offered anything yet - just asked if I was interested. In all likelihood, it'd prob. be for another homemade movie prop. Sounds like a lot of work for little reward. If the guy asks for a design for a cryogenics technician without much more description, the artist is doing all the work: costume design, chracter physical attributes, etc. Not sure it's worth it, other than the slim chance of having something you design get put into a movie.

pretty damn good colors

This is one of the better coloring jobs I've seen. Check out how the colorist adds muscle tone to an otherwise flat drawing.

Cover for hank's war

just for the hell of it I did a little cover (ok ok, it's a slight copy off of a cover from "the losers") but it was just for fun. Remember "Stool pigeon press"? I thought it was hilarious!

stormtrooper helmet

looks like I might actually get it! looks pretty cool in the photo. If this works out I might consider doing work for his other project. We'll see...

Hank's war

Here is a little sketch of a possible cover to the old comic. I wasn't sure if we ever had a name for it so I am calling it, "Hank's War". The little boxes didn't come out so good...need to start usign rulers when I am tryign to do straight lines. but here is something to look at....

New FREE website....

here is the free site so far. I haven't uploaded everything yet or transferred the DNS (hence the URL is funny) I just wanted to get a feel for how it would look with the ads. So...I think it sucks with ads. what do you think?

options:

1) accept the ads and design the site so everything appears below the ads, that is, integrate the ads into the design a bit better.

2) these guys have a $35/year package that has no banner.

3) keep the lunar pages site. easier but costlier....($99/year)

We can provide artists with reference photography of the main character as well,
but the design we've decided on is attached. We're looking for a character /

potomac studios website

I renewed our domain....we still own www.potomacstudios.com for one more year. However, I have not renewed our webhost so after July, if you enter that domain into your browser you will get a site not found message. We need to find a free webhost who allows us to register our domain.

here is one possible candidate (look it over if you have anytime)

I am going on vacation for a week. I will look into the particulars upon my return. If anyone else has ideas let me know.

Title: Pet Mural in a Children's Room
Category: Illustration / Cartooning / Painting / Sculpting
Description:This project is a mural for a children's room depicting our family dogs. We're looking for someone who is familair with dog portraits. The mural will need to be done on a canvas since the wall it will hang on is paneled. The size of the mural will be approximately 4x6. We would like to be able to see sketches of the project before the painting has begun. We were hoping to have this completed by late September.

I don't have time for this - either of you interested?

So here it is...

Stuff Im working on...

[Ryan's last post from the other site....]

Here's what I'm working on right now. Prob. won't get to finish it until after my deadline at the office. The actual images are on 14 x 17 bristol. Darth Vader ran off the page, so I had to cut and paste. I have to say, that M-effer is one challenging subject to draw. Anyway, like I said, will eventually get the Deathstar hangar with Mill. Falcon in the background. Also wil draw the lightsabers in photoshop.

I'm in now

Posted some stuff at old wastedspace. I don't really care how this one looks. Ditch the orange if you want.

Chicken home

Here is sara veron's website

I am fascinated by this type of art for some reason. I think I like the speed with which it can be done and even though it is really simple I think this kind of stuff shows considerable skill.

I'm on board

I'm in with an obscene username that I won't remember.

SW Stuff

Here's that other starwars stuff i posted for that artxilla contest a while ago. I lost the final colored versions in the great PC crash of '04. What I was able to save was a non-colored kenobi and a 90% colored padme dwg.

I'll try to scan the stuff I'm working on right now, but the sheets are big, so I'll have to break it up and piece it together.

Testing for wastedspace transition

Thursday, January 20, 2005

Great quote on too much process from Herman Wouk's Caine Mutiny:

"The Navy is a master plan designed by geniuses for execution by idiots. If you're not an idiot, but find yourself in the Navy, you can only operate well by pretending to be one. All the shortcuts and economies and common-sense changes that your native intelligence suggests to you are mistakes. Learn to quash them. Constantly ask yourself, 'How would I do this if I were a fool?' Throttle down your mind to a crawl. Then you'll never go wrong."
