Stuff Im working on...

[Ryan's last post from the other site....]

Here's what I'm working on right now. Prob. won't get to finish it until after my deadline at the office. The actual images are on 14 x 17 bristol. Darth Vader ran off the page, so I had to cut and paste. I have to say, that M-effer is one challenging subject to draw. Anyway, like I said, will eventually get the Deathstar hangar with Mill. Falcon in the background. Also wil draw the lightsabers in photoshop.

Looks really cool so far. questions/comments:
1) so they are each on separate paper?
2) are you going to draw the backgrounds on these same sheets of paper or draw it separately and add it in digitally?
3) The hands look decent..obi wan's left looks stragely reminiscent of the adam warren sketch from the movie....
4) more big shoes with almost no contour or detail...coming soon? or R-dub signiture style?

Thanks.
1) yep - separate paper
2) i will likely print these out on smaller paper, then draw the background on that. I've tried doing everything separately before and ended up with inconsistent lineweights when scaling the elements.
3) adam warren sketch from the movie? where can I find that? I took that hand from Ep. 3. Kenobi gets in that stance a couple times before the duels begin. hands aren't my strength, but I was pleased with how they turned out. I need to expand my library - lots of clenched fists in my drawings.
4) Will put in some detail with the digital coloring. I didn't draw alot of detail because that's how the actual boot is. Everything looks real flat at this stage. Coloring should add a lot.

uh the adam warren reference is actually adam hughes (?) from that comic con sketch book film you sent out to us a couple weeks ago. anyway I was just messing with you.

I am excited to see the final product. looks like a lot of fun. I am jealous. Right now my project is painting a piture for danette's mom's beach house (where we are going next week). It's going well so far. I need to finish it before I leave for vacation this weekend so I can give it to her when we get down there. I will post a picture of it later. I guess it counts as a potomac studios gig. She said she would pay me for it but told her not to worry about it. I may just charge her for materials...rambling....

wrt to the boots I thought the jedi's had those mummy looking boots like a bunch of bandages wrapped around their feet....maybe that was just poor ass luke.

I dig the different textures on vader's suit you really pulled that off well.

Ahhhh...I thought of the Adam Hughes drawing when I did that hand, so good observation on your part. I was having internet connection issues at the time, so I wasn't able to look at the videos again for reference. The pose is actually referencing several martial arts images I found on the net. In Ep. 3 they don't really show his full body when in that stance (which reminds me - I need to make copies of the DVD for you guys).

The painting sounds cool. Any chance of throwing a progress photo up here?

The boot I referenced for kenobi is from the prequels. I don't think hey ever really show his boots in the originals since he's got a longer robe. I think you're right about Luke's boots though.

Yeah, I was surprised at how complex vader's suit is. Lot's of shiny parts, matte parts, fabric, leather... When I started inking, I felt like I was f-ing it up, but I think it turned out ok.

I dunno about getting together for drawing this week. I feel like i'm starting to drown at work. We'll see...

no problem...we dont need to meet this week. I dont know if i can anyway. I have to finish the painting before friday so I can pack and leave on saturday morning (3am....kids are great!)

Yeah again. I think vader's suit is looking really nice.

My project is "sand pipers walking along the beach" so far I have the background (ocean wave pulling away to reveal wet sand and some foam on the beach, wave receding in the background) still need to add some highlights to the water then its adding in the sandpipers. haven't decided if I am doing 3 or 5 of them. Given the time it's probably going to be 3! I'll post a pic tonight of the background pre-piper...
